COATBRIDGE ROVERS FC celebrates sporting in schools by awarding primary schools in Coatbridge and surrounding areas a monthly award, sponsored by local and national organisations. Glenboig PS is the first recipient, sponsored by Ellis Décor and TeamFeePay.

Coatbridge Rovers are urging fans to show their love for sport by launching their monthly award for outstanding uptake in sporting activities and fitness in young people in Coatbridge and surrounding areas.

During lockdown, the club launched a primary school football workbook which included word searches, quizzes and colouring-in alongside six weeks of easy to do fitness drills and exercises and each day, more schools came on board and got involved. The club released YouTube videos of demonstrations on how to carry out the drills performed by Girls Academy Coordinator and former Celtic defender, Carleen Dolan. The uptake was incredibly impressive and chairman, Gary Flint, decided to offer an award to the most outstanding school and carry the spirit on throughout the coming months.

Earlier this year, Coatbridge Rovers set out a club vision in bringing football and exercise to the community and alongside the Scottish FA, set out a plan for spring/summer which is yet to be announced. These new programmes complement the School of the Month award and the Clubs vision is to have something truly for everyone in our community. The School of the Month Award is a further step towards achieving this goal and making sure Coatbridge Rovers is a friendly and welcoming place for everyone.

Glenboig Primary School Headteacher, Catriona Calvert said:

“We were delighted when Coatbridge Rovers contacted us to offer their football video sessions and workbooks. During lockdown, we offered two live PE slots per week. Coatbridge Rovers videos were ideal as we could play them to the children live on teams, the teacher could talk the children through the drills and then observe & support on the live lesson. The videos were simple enough for all children to take part in and easy to follow. We could provide challenge using speed for the same drill. It’s great to see clubs being community-minded during these difficult times and offering these sessions at no cost to the school.

We are proud of the links and relationship we have with Coatbridge Rovers. Our children respond well to their coaches. We were delighted to be named school of the month.”

Coatbridge Rovers FC Chairman and Founder said:

“As a club, we are always available and keen to build partnerships with local schools in and around our area. The response we received as well as the feedback from so many schools was fantastic. We’re honoured by the fact we were able to provide activities for the kids during the difficult times that we all went through.

A massive congratulations to Glenboig Primary for winning the award and I look forward to continuing our partnership with all of our local schools, moving forward“

Chairman Gary Flint and Club Development Officer Martin O’Neill present four Glenboig Primary School pupils who took part in the programme with the inaugural School of the Month Award.

Moving forward, schools will be interacted with through their Twitter account and asked to show off their sporting activities regularly. Winners will receive an award for them to keep manufactured by Awards FC and sponsored by different organisations.
